Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior, was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10 years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah means gentle and very gentle. Her cousin gave it to her when she was aged eight. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. The play she played in her high school Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah was among the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the song. The singer signed Latifah, and released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
